According to reports, Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water has officially been selected for the Film Forward competition at the 2025 Thessaloniki International Film Festival. Sources reveal that the feature, which marks Stewart’s first venture as both writer and director, will compete alongside twelve other titles known for their innovative and boundary-breaking narratives.

Officials stated that the Film Forward section celebrates films pushing creative limits, with this year’s jury including choreographer Constanza Macras, filmmaker Christos Massalas, and programmer Valeria Wagner. The top honors include the Golden Alexander Award for Best Feature Film, carrying an €8,000 prize, and the Silver Alexander Award for Best Direction, valued at €4,000.

As confirmed earlier, The Chronology of Water made its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival. The project, based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s acclaimed memoir, portrays the emotional journey of a woman navigating the aftermath of an abusive childhood, exploring freedom, relationships, and addiction before rediscovering herself through writing. The film stars Imogen Poots as Lidia Yuknavitch, supported by a cast including Jim Belushi, Thora Birch, Charlie Carrick, Susannah Flood, Kim Gordon, and Tom Sturridge.

Media outlets report that following its Cannes debut, the film was quickly acquired across several territories. Paris-based Les Films du Losange is handling international sales, securing distribution in Benelux, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Hungary, Poland, and beyond. The BFI is set to release the film in the UK and Ireland, while The Forge will oversee its U.S. release. Les Films du Losange will also distribute the French version.

The 2025 Thessaloniki International Film Festival is scheduled to run from October 30th to November 9th. Festival insiders suggest that The Chronology of Water could emerge as one of the standout entries of the season, drawing strong anticipation from both critics and audiences eager to see Kristen Stewart’s evolution from Hollywood star to visionary filmmaker.

With this selection, Stewart joins a celebrated lineup of directors whose films define the modern cinematic landscape, marking another significant milestone in her career following acclaimed performances in Clouds of Sils Maria and Spencer.
