Sabalenka Defends US Open Crown with Win Over Anisimova

NEW YORK, September 6, 2025 — World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka made history on Saturday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium, defeating American Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-6(3) to claim her second consecutive US Open title and the fourth Grand Slam trophy of her career.

The 27-year-old from Belarus became the first woman since Serena Williams in 2014 to defend the women’s singles crown in New York. For Sabalenka, who had fallen short earlier this year in the finals of the Australian Open and Roland Garros, the triumph was redemption and a reaffirmation of her dominance on hard courts.

The match began with nerves on both sides, as five service breaks punctuated the opening set. Sabalenka found her rhythm in the closing games of the opener and moved ahead 6-3 after Anisimova’s forehand missed the mark at 5-3. Known for her power, Sabalenka pressed that advantage in the second set, forcing 29 unforced errors from her opponent with deep, aggressive hitting.

Serving for the championship at 5-4, Sabalenka stumbled with a missed overhead, giving Anisimova hope. But under the closed roof of Ashe, she reset and controlled the tiebreak, clinching victory on her third championship point as Anisimova’s return sailed out. Relief washed over Sabalenka as she sank to the court in celebration, then stood to wrap her team in a jubilant embrace.

“This one feels special,” Sabalenka said during the trophy ceremony. “Earlier this year I lost a couple of finals, but tonight I fought hard, managed my emotions, and I’m proud to defend this title.”

Anisimova, just 24, was appearing in her second straight major final after losing to Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon. Despite falling short, she will climb to a career-high world No. 4 in the WTA rankings. Her strong run in New York included a thrilling semifinal win over Naomi Osaka and a quarterfinal upset of Swiatek, underlining her place among the new wave of American tennis stars.

The victory marked Sabalenka’s 100th career Grand Slam main-draw match win and her 56th tour-level victory this season, more than any other player. She has now held the world No. 1 ranking for 46 consecutive weeks and added to her tally of hard-court majors, which also include two Australian Open titles.

With cheers echoing around Flushing Meadows, Sabalenka transformed earlier setbacks into strength, successfully defending her title in New York and reinforcing her place among the elite of women’s tennis.
